10. Laying Out Vinterstad

The wall is complete. It is magnificent in size, and it does great justice to this plot of land on which I have chosen to settle. If I stand atop the hill in the northeast quadrant, I can barely make out the southern gate through the trees. It appears to be over two thousand fadmr from North Gate to South Gate.

A modest stream runs through the southwest quadrant. It flows northward from the southern mountains. I hadn’t taken much notice of it until the thaw. Jötnar devised a clever way to allow the water to flow undeterred while maintaining a stronghold along the wall. The stream flows under the limestone through a very large inverted funnel of sorts. The funnel is equipped with an underwater steel grate, which will keep out unwelcome visitors.

Consequently, I have decided to farm the southwest quadrant because of its proximity to the stream. It will be an excellent water source for the crops, when they begin to grow. The northeast, of course, is where I keep the house – yes, I have finally resigned to calling it a house instead of a dwelling. Putting a wall around it lends a lot more permanence to it. I’ll put a barn and some storage sheds in the northwest, and the southeast quadrant will be the work and maintenance area. If I can manage to find that ox, it would be handy to build a new sled. And a plough!
